“E is having an AMAZING time. I’ve never seen him so happy about a program!”
What makes our Robotics programs at The Laboratory unique?
Students Enjoy the Independence of Choosing Their Own Things
Our students love our program because we let them focus on their individual interests and work at their own pace. Some students are more into building robots. Some students are more into programming robots. Each experience is unique because it’s their creation that they have invested time and interest in. In a session, we might have snakes that slither, a machine that can solve a Rubik’s Cube, a LEGO brickworld of carnival rides, an electric guitar that really plays, a self-driving car, a robot programmed to rescue an astronaut in distress, and a zoo menagerie.
Students Are Constantly Being Challenged on Their Own Terms
Since students are working at their own pace, they get to choose when they want a new challenge. They are not stuck with one robot throughout the week. They can keep moving to take it apart, build new robots, and re-program their robots to do different things. We have builds from the home program, the education program, and the expansion kit. We also have books on building and coding so students with specific interests can move even further.
We’re Not Just Sitting in Front of Screens All Day Our space is set up for movement and interaction. Students help each other problem-solve, program, build, and test out their creations. We have 3 First LEGO League tables where students can test out their robots and perform programming challenges. Our students work together to make brickworlds, towns and menageries. We even have an enclosed platform designed specifically for robot wrestling. Weather-permitting, we go to the park!
Our Instructors are Classroom Teachers Who Understand How Students Learn….and How to Make it Fun! Even with everyone working on their own projects, our instructors’ experience allows them to help each different child. Rather than just giving kids the answer, or doing it for them, our instructors guide them through the process so they can become independent problem-solvers.
You Don’t Need Prior Experience
Our program uses two different types of systems to let students of all levels have a fun, successful experience. Our LEGO WeDo and LEGO WeDO 2.0 systems are based off of standard LEGO bricks. Since most students are familiar with LEGOs it empowers them to gain confidence in building and programming. Our LEGO Mindstorms EV3 programmable mini-computer brick, motor, and sensor system offers more complex builds and challenges.
