At The Laboratory, we use the sciences to smell, touch, problem-solve, role-play, critically think, story-tell, and create greater connections to history.
We create connections that matter to get students excited about learning.
Case Study: How to use STEAM to Bring History to Life
We “Smelled” Ancient Egypt To immerse students, and create historical context, we use biology, chemistry, physiology, and math to recreate “beauty products” that could have been used by Cleopatra. We explored the history of beauty products, learned ancient methods of extracting fragrance, and created perfumes that could have been worn during that time. We followed up with scientific testing to measure the effectiveness of Cleopatra’s beauty products vs. similar modern products used today.
We Became Vikings! During our How to Train Your Dragon camp, we became part of a historical Viking clan. We all had our own Viking nicknames, learned to write our names in Runes, and role-played Viking traditions. Once we set the scene, kids were excited to learn elements of engineering, physics, and astronomy as we made our own Viking ships, learned historical navigation, and even used math to create a tabletop Viking game.
We Competed in Ancient Greece From Chariot racing to discovering the chemistry behind Arachne’s web. From navigating the labyrinth to learning the anatomy of Mythological Monsters. We used physics, chemistry, anatomy, engineering Greek mythology and popular literature to create challenges, role-play, and immerse students in Ancient Greece.
